Championship outfit Aston Villa could be forced to challenge Serie A giants Milan for Chelsea’s out-of-favour Premier League defender Gary Cahill.

If Aston Villa want to bring Gary Cahill back to the Second City, they will have to fight off competition from one of the most famous clubs in world football.

Cahill is out of favour at Chelsea, having played just 21 minutes of Premier League football all season under Mauricio Sarri. And The Telegraph has reported that ambitious Championship outfit Aston Villa are hoping to bring the veteran defender back to the club where he started his career. Cahill’s contract expires at the end of the season.

But, according to Corriere Dello Sport, Aston Villa’s hopes of re-signing Cahill are under threat from none other than AC Milan.

The Serie A powerhouses are enduring a defensive injury crisis right now, with captain Alessio Romagnoli having recently been ruled out with a thigh problem, meaning they are looking at short-term options and Cahill looks to fit the bill.

And you can see why a move to Milan would appeal to a player in the autumn of his career – even if the Rossoneri are not the force they once were.

So this is perhaps the biggest challenge facing Jesus Garcia Pitarch since he was appointed Aston Villa’s sporting director in October.
