Aston Villa loaning Scott Hogan to Sheffield United would be baffling

Sheffield United are understood to be interested in signing Scott Hogan on loan from Championship rivals Aston Villa.

In hindsight, maybe £12 million was slightly too much for Scott Hogan.

Aston Villa looked to have pulled off a coup when they beat Premier League opposition to the signing of Brentford’s Republic of Ireland international striker in January 2017.

But while Hogan has struggled with injuries throughout his time in the Midlands, it is difficult to argue against the idea that he has been something of an expensive flop in Villa colours. In the last year and a half, the striker has netted just seven goals in 51 Championship appearances for Steve Bruce’s side.

Even still, letting Hogan leave on loan would be nothing short of a baffling decision.

It is understood that Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is interested in signing the 26-year-old on a temporary basis. This comes amid reports in the Sheffield Star that Villa are expected to make Hogan surplus to requirements as they aim to raise funds to avoid Financial Fair Play sanctions.

But surely Villa – who need to make £50 million in the next two transfer windows via player sales – would not benefit from loaning Hogan out. Yes, a spell at Brammal Lane could help him rediscover his mojo but Villa need to sell now.

And, even if they would expect to take a big hit on their £12 million investment, something is better than nothing right now and Hogan could still be one of their most sellable assets.
