James Collins has been training with Aston Villa for a number of weeks but will the Championship giants hand him a contract?
As plenty of Aston Villa fans have pointed out, Joan Collins would walk into their back-line right now, never mind James.
The downside to the expansive, attacking football Dean Smith has brought to Villa Park is that the Midland giants look more vulnerable at the back than ever right now. Only five teams in the Championship have conceded more than Villa’s 30 this season with five of those coming in Wednesday’s 10-goal thriller at home to Nottingham Forest.
As a result, questions have been asked about whether Aston Villa will look to remedy the problem by bringing James Collins back to the club he represented between 2009 and 2012.
The 35-year-old former Wales international has been training with the Midland giants during the last few weeks after leaving West Ham United in the summer. And Smith told the Birmingham Mail that the club would finally make a decision about whether to hand Collins a contract in the very near future.
And while some are hardly thrilled by the prospect of signing a 35-year-old free-agent on a short-term deal, others are quick to point out that this is a deal with few risks that could reap plenty of rewards.
