Callum O’Hare delivered another statement of intent as he took apart Wolves in Aston Villa’s 6-1 Under 23 win on Monday night.

Wolverhampton Wanderers may be further ahead than Aston Villa now for the first time in a number of decades, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side cruising to promotion and 13 points clear of their third place rivals.

But, at Under 23 level, Aston Villa are still the big boys of the Black Country.

Kevin MacDonald’s side swept Wolves aside 6-1 in a display of thrilling attacking football on Monday night – and it will be no surprise at all to Villa fanatics to learn that Callum O’Hare was at the centre of it all.

O’Hare was on the scoresheet alongside Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Harvey Knibbs, Alex Prosser and a double from Corey Blackett-Taylor but there was little disputing the man of the match.

Almost everything Villa did went through the diminutive number ten, whose skill, vision and technique surely belongs at a far higher level than reserve team football. Fortunately, first-team manager Steve Bruce was there to watch and admire another display that surely solidified O’Hare’s status as Villa’s next big thing.

So far, opportunities in the first-team have been fleeting for the Solihull-born 19-year-old, who has made just four substitute appearances in the Championship this season, amounting to just over 103 minutes.

But, if he continues to thrive at Under 23 level, Bruce will surely have no choice but to give him more of a chance.
