If Tottenham Hotspur want to bring Andre Gomes to the Premier League, they must check out his latest comments about life in La Liga.

Andre Gomes possibly needs a move to Tottenham Hotspur more than Tottenham Hotspur need a move for Andre Gomes.

Things are going from bad to worse for the Portuguese international midfielder at Barcelona, and, as things stand, he should be counting down the days until the end of the season with AS claiming that Spurs and West Ham are both preparing moves to rescue Gomes from his Camp Nou nightmare.

A £31 million signing from Valencia in 2016, Gomes has struggled to show that he is anywhere near the level demanded at Barca. He has barely featured from the start under Ernesto Valverde and was audibly booed when he came off the bench in last week’s 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid which all but decided the La Liga title.

And, speaking to Panenka, Gomes reflected on just how bad things have gotten for him in Catalonia.

“I do not feel good playing…I’m not enjoying what I do,” Gomes, a European champion with Portugal in 2016, admitted.

“My friends tell me I am playing with the hand brake on and I know this is true, and it is bothering me why I cannot step it up from there.

“Things changed after my first six months and there was more pressure, which is fine but I’m too self-critical of myself. I’m a perfectionist and cannot tolerate my mistakes, it has become a hell. I cannot shake negative moments out of my head and it impacts on my performances and I am thinking too much.

“It leads me to feel ashamed and sometimes I feel that I cannot leave the house due to the shame and due to people looking at me.”

Perhaps this should warn off Tottenham and West Ham, both of whom would have to part with a substantial sum to take Gomes to the Premier League, from making a move this summer.

Then again, Gomes at his Valencia best was a dynamic and forceful central midfielder who was a genuine joy to watch. A change of scenery could do him the world of good.
