Tottenham Hotspur beat Premier League rivals West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, with North London neighbours Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
No one could argue that Mauricio Pochettino has not massively improved Tottenham Hotspur since taking over in 2014.
However, for all the free-flowing football, the Premier League title challenges and the transformation of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and co, the fact that Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008 hangs over Pochettino’s head like a cloud.
But could their long silverware drought come to an end this season? The Premier League looks beyond Spurs this season while they are facing an imminent elimination from the Champions League in the group phase, but the EFL Cup could well be a viable target.
Tottenham are into the quarter-finals after beating rivals West Ham 3-1 at the London Stadium on Wednesday, thanks to a double from Heung-min Son and a rare goal from Fernando Llorente.
Speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT (1 November, 9.50am), former Arsenal man Ray Parlour has backed Tottenham to go all the way in the EFL Cup this season.
“Course they will, course they will (win a trophy). I think it will be very soon,” Parlour said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they won the Carabao Cup. They’re a good enough side, they just need to get over the final hurdle.”
Tottenham have developed a reputation as a ‘nearly man’ team; a side that has come so close to tasting glory in recent years only for victory to slip through their fingers at crucial moments.
