Wolverhampton Wanderers’ unsung hero Conor Coady was on the radar of Premier League and Midland rivals West Bromwich Albion.
The way things are going right now, Midland rivals Wolves and West Brom could swap divisions in a few months.
Wolves are storming to the Championship title, 12 points clear of second placed Aston Villa. West Brom, meanwhile, remain mired at the bottom of the Premier League after Monday night’s 3-0 defeat at Chelsea. The Baggies are now seven points adrift of safety.
So it almost goes without saying that any hope West Brom had of luring Conor Coady from Molineux to The Hawthorns is over for good.
As reported by the Sun, West Brom were very impressed by Coady’s exceptional performance as Wolves held Manchester City to a goalless draw in the EFL Cup. The 24-year-old had been converted from a central midfielder into a centre-back under Nuno Espirito Santo and, according to the Sun, was valued at around £7 million.
With doubts surrounding the future of captain Jonny Evans and Gareth McAuley in the autumn of his career, Coady should surely be one of the defensive options in consideration by West Brom as they prepare for what could be a testing summer transfer window.
But why would Coady choose to swap Wolves for West Brom?
While the Chinese-funded Wolves are embarking on one of the continent’s most exciting prospects, with European football on the agenda in the next few seasons, West Brom appear to be stuck in a rut and declining fast.
Coady, who has started all but one of Wolves’ 31 Championship games this season, is better off staying where he is.
