Reports are linking West Brom with a shock summer move for Tottenham Hotspur mistfit Vincent Janssen.
You’d think a proven, prolific goalscorer would be high on West Brom’s list of priorities in the summer.
Especially when line-leading Venezuelan Salomon Rondon is in the midst of a five month scoring drought and his somewhat underwhelming understudy, Hal Robson-Kanu, has just two all season.
Therefore, you could forgive West Brom supporters for feeling a little disappointed by reports suggesting they could offer Vincent Janssen an escape route out of his Tottenham Hotspur nightmare, as claimed by The Mirror.
The fact that the Dutchman has repaid his £18.5 million price tag (Daily Mail) with just one Premier League goal from open play doesn’t exactly suggest he’d be the striker who could take West Brom into the Europa League next season.
Yet, despite looking ponderous and ill-suited to the pace of English football, not to mention demonstrating a tendency to capitulate in front of goal, Janssen should not be written off yet.
He netted a league-leading 27 goals in 34 games in the Eredivisie for AZ Alkmaar last season, his debut campaign in any top flight on the continent. And, at his best, the 22-year-old is a powerful, physical presence and an excellent outlet capable of bringing his team-mates into the attack.
In many ways, he seems a far better fit for Tony Pulis’ direct tactics than Mauricio Pochettino’s intricate, high intensity gameplan.
And it appears that some Baggies supporters are willing to look beyond that horrific tally of two goals in 24 Premier League games.
