Juan Foyth was expected to have a bigger role at Tottenham Hotspur next season but they are now reportedly targeting Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt.

Juan Foyth has not made a Premier League appearance for Tottenham Hotspur since his £9 million arrival from Estudiantes last August. In fact, the Argentine defender has made just eight first-team appearances for the North London giants, all coming in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the Champions League.
Although it seems that Mauricio Pochettino, who is not a manager who likes to rush young players into the first-team before they are ready, will hand Foyth a more prominent role next season.
The manager has praised his young compatriot highly and Football London suggests that Foyth, an athletic defender renowned for his ability to dribble out from defence, will surely find Premier League chances easier to come by in 2018/19.

But it must be noted that the same report has claimed Tottenham’s interest in another of the world’s most talented and technically gifted young centre-halves. It is understood that Spurs see Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt as a potential successor for the allegedly departing Toby Alderweireld, alhough it will cost a club-record £50 million to bring the youngest captain in Eredivisie history to North London.

The report also states that Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson, who is valued at a similarly huge fee, is also on Pochettino’s radar. And Jonny Evans, who will be available for £3 million when West Brom go down thanks to a relegation clause in his contract, is also on the shortlist.
Even if Alderweireld leaves, Spurs will no doubt sign a replacement. So it is far from certain that Foyth will move up the pecking order at all.
