Could Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United be going head-to-head to sign the goalkeeper who would be their number one for years to come? Yes, if reports are to be believed.

According to the Sun, Spurs are identifying goalkeeping targets as they prepare for the exit of long-serving back-up Michel Vorm this summer. And it is understood that they have turned their attention to Manchester United’s Johnstone, who has thrived over the last year during a loan spell at Championship promotion chasers Aston Villa.

This comes less than a month after the Mirror claimed that Johnstone has also been scouted by West Ham, with his impressive displays in the second tier catching the eye of Hammers boss David Moyes of late.

The 25-year-old has never made a professional appearance during seven years at Old Trafford and will be available for a bargain £6.5 million this summer, according to the Sun.

And news that Tottenham and West Ham are both interested should provide plenty of intrigue.

After all, there could be a gap in West Ham’s squad for a new first-choice shot-stopper next season, with Adrian linked with a return to Spain and the future of Manchester City loanee Joe Hart uncertain.

And although Hugo Lloris has plenty of years left at just 31, Tottenham’s France captain has been making some uncharacteristic mistakes of late and his form has declined notably in the last few months.

Whoever wins the race for Johnstone could have a future number one waiting in the wings.
