Russell Martin left Championship side Norwich City on loan for Scottish Premiership giants Rangers during the January transfer window.

Russell Martin was hardly a regular in Norwich City’s side when he joined Rangers on loan in January until the end of the season.

The long-serving centre-back had not featured for Daniel Farke’s side in the Championship since a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Millwall back in August. And Norwich were so keen to get Martin out of Carrow Road that they allowed the 32-year-old to leave on a temporary basis.

Martin is a player with great experience, having represented Norwich across four Premier League seasons while also playing 29 games for Scotland.

The Brighton-born defender’s best days appear to be behind him now, however, and it is fair to say he has not made the most impressive start of all Rangers’ January signings.

Martin endured a bit of a nightmare in the thrilling 5-3 win away at Hamilton on Sunday. It was his slack clearance which helped the Accies score their second before giving away a late penalty for a handball.

Fortunately, the inspired Jamie Murphy and hat-trick hero Josh Windass bailed out the veteran centre-back.

But these are the sort of errors that Martin must cut out of his game, and fast, if he is to avoid a repeat of his unceremonious removal from the starting XI at Norwich.

After all, there are no shortage of talented defenders at Rangers’ disposal, with some supporters even asking for Fabio Cardoso to be given a fresh start at Ibrox.

Martin has much to do to prove there is life in this old dog yet.
