Newcastle United and West Brom are reportedly prepared to fight for Wolves’ Conor Coady in January.
With Tony Pulis sacked by West Brom on Monday, it remains to be seen what becomes of his transfer targets at The Hawthorns.
The Sun reported in October that West Brom were interested in signing £7 million-rated Wolves defender Conor Coady in the New Year, after being impressed by his performance in the Championship leader’s heroic EFL Cup performance away to Manchester City, drawing 0-0 over 120 minutes before losing on penalties.
Coady, a central midfielder at trade with the versatility to play at full-back or centre-half, is something of an archetypal Pulis target. But with the Welshman now gone, could fellow suitors Newcastle United consider themselves the favourites if Wolves let Coady go?
The report adds that The Magpies are also interested in the one-time Liverpool youth captain, who was earning rave reviews in the club’s junior ranks towards the latter days of Rafael Benitez’s reign at Anfield.
And Coady’s adaptability would make him a valuable addition to a Newcastle side set up primarily to sit deep and hit teams on the counter. Coady would also give Benitez plenty of options and, at just £7 million, would be comfortably within budget – even if owner Mike Ashley doesn’t manage to sell the club by January.
Newcastle should take heart, then, in seeing Pulis given his marching orders from The Hawthorns. Because with West Brom yet to appoint to a new manager, it is uncertain whether their interest in Coady left along with Pulis.
