Could Pierre-Michel Lasogga be replaced at Elland Road as Leeds United target Swansea City’s McBurnie, who is starring at Championship rivals Barnsley.
It never seemed likely that Pierre-Michel Lasogga would be sticking around at Elland Road next season.
The German striker has spent the year at Elland Road from Bundesliga outfit Hamburg but, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, are paying just £15,000 of his £50,000 weekly wages – which meant a permanent transfer was always likely to fall outside of their budget despite HSV’s desperation to sell this summer.
But if the former Hertha Berlin striker ends up not earning a permanent deal, could Leeds sign a striker who would be a far better fit instead?
Lasogga has scored 10 goals in 21 Championship starts this season but hitting the net is sometimes not enough. The 26-year-old has left fans frustrated with his lack of movement and inability to offer any sort of a threat in a number of league fixtures, particularly since Paul Heckingbottom replaced Thomas Christiansen in the dugout in February.
Lasogga has also now gone nine games without a goal for Leeds and, according to The Mail, The Whites have now made signing Oli McBurnie from Swansea City a priority.
McBurnie, who was born in Leeds and is keen to return, has scored eight league goals on loan at Barnsley while Lasogga endures the worst barren run of his season.
The Scot is a hard-working centre-forward who does everything in his power to get himself in the right place at the right time to finish of chances – an attribute Lasogga has been criticised for lacking on a number of occasions.
On paper, McBurnie appears far more likely to score regualrly at Championship level than the erratic, hot and cold Lasogga.
