Andy Lonergan has not played a Championship game for Leeds United since November and, for the most part, Felix Wiedwald has done OK since.
A number of Leeds United fans made it very clear who they want to start between the sticks against Derby County on Wednesday night.
After Andy Lonergan posted an upbeat message on Twitter demanding Leeds pick up where they left off on Sunday’s impressive comeback draw against Bristol City, he was inundated by messages from supporters hoping he would get the nod in goal.
This, therefore, obviously means that they want Felix Wiedwald dropped. The German has endured a difficult debut season at Elland Road since his summer move from Werder Bremen and did not exactly cover himself in glory against the Robins.
Wiedwald flapped at a long-throw as Famara Diedhiou fired Bristol City into an early lead that would later be doubled with an almost identical goal a few minutes later. This was not the first time that Wiedwald had failed to deal with an aerial ball this season.
However, if you could overlook that error, Wiedwald’s recent form has been quite impressive. He was superb in the 0-0 draw with Hull City in late January, pulling off a series of top-class saves to show everyone exactly why Leeds signed him in the first-place.
And, yes, defeats to Cardiff City and Sheffield United were disappointing but Wiedwald could hardly be blamed and, in truth, Leeds could have lost by more without him between the sticks.
Meanwhile, 34-year-old Lonergan was hardly impressive during his brief spell as the number one earlier in the season and Leeds fans should do well to remember that.
After all, there is a reason why he has not started since that 4-1 thrashing at Wolves back in November.
