Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of Hibs’ talismanic midfielder John McGinn.
Hibernian have manager Neil Lennon to thank for ensuring that they will get as much money as possible if John McGinn does depart Easter Road in the near future.
The Scottish Sun reports that Lennon has insisted for some time that his 22-year-old midfielder is worth £5 million at the very least – and the more he talks up McGinn, the more his value surely increases. And a superb performance in Scotland’s 1-0 defeat to The Netherlands in an international friendly last week may just have added a few more pounds to his price-tag.
“John is one of the best midfielders in the country with the form he is in at the minute,” Lennon told the Daily Record. “The more John plays and the form he shows then it’s inevitable there will be interest from elsewhere.
“John’s range of passing is improving all the time. His tackling can be ferocious, he has great desire and there is an honesty about John that you don’t want to lose either.
Unfortunately for McGinn’s long-standing suitors Celtic, the 2016/17 Championship Player of the Year is developing so rapidly that he will surely stretch their budget to its limit if manager Brendan Rodgers wants to renew his interest in the New Year.
£5 million would make McGinn the fourth most expensive signing in Celtic’s history. But a starring Scotland performance, coupled with excellent domestic displays and interest from Nottingham Forest means that he could command an even larger fee by the time the transfer window rolls around.
Rodgers told the Daily Record that he’d be willing to smash Celtic’s £6 million transfer record – and he may have to make good on these claims if he wants McGinn at Parkhead.
