Dundee’s Scott Bain has moved to Parkhead to solve Scottish Premiership giants Celtic’s goalkeeping crisis but can he replace Craig Gordon?

Celtic finally got the goalkeeper they were looking for on transfer deadline day, signing Scott Bain on loan for the rest of the season.

But if the 26-year-old impresses during his six month spell with the Champions, do not rule out Celtic making the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Celtic might need a replacement for the injured Craig Gordon right now with the Scotland international ruled out of three months and Dorus de Vries being the only other senior ‘keeper in the squad.

But Gordon is no spring chicken anymore and, at the age of 35, the Hoops need to start looking for a younger, long-term replacement for a shot-stopper who has served them very well over the years.

And Bain could be that man. The uncapped Scot has been one of the most solid goalkeepers in the league during the last few seasons and only found himself out of favour at Dundee, and on loan at Hibernian, due to the fact that he was stalling on signing a new contract.

So, as it stands, Bain will be a free agent when his loan spell at Parkhead comes to an end. Which means Celtic will not have to spend a penny to tie him down on a long-term deal should he fill the void left by Gordon between now and the veteran’s spring time return.

Signing Bain on loan could prove to be an inspired decision. Because they might just have found Gordon’s future successor, and got him six months early without having to pay anything at all.
