Isaac Success was tipped to swap Premier League Watford for Championship challengers Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa’s chances of signing Isaac Success on loan between now and the end of August appeared to take a hit on transfer deadline day.

The Mirror (live blog, 1.57pm) reported that Watford would only send the out-of-favour winger to Villa Park if they were able to sign a new attacker to enhance their squad. But despite links with Emiliano Sala of Nantes and the Barcelona benchwarmer Paco Alcacer, the Hornets endured a very quiet end to the transfer window.

But does that mean that Aston Villa’s hopes of landing Success are over?

After spending the second half of last season with Malaga, the 22-year-old appears to be back in Javi Gracia’s first-team plans. Success was introduced off the bench with 15 minutes to go in the 2-0 opening day win against Brighton at Vicarage Road, his first game for the club in almost a year.

Success, who became Watford’s record signing in 2016 when he joined from Granada for £12.5 million, would give them something different; a speedy impact substitute.

And with no time to bring in a replacement, it would make little sense to loan him to Aston Villa now. Especially with Gracia seemingly willing to offer Success a second chance.
