Scottish Premiership giants Celtic need a new goalkeeper next season and are considering deals for Dundee’s Scott Bain and Manchester City’s Angus Gunn.
Angus Gunn may have the considerable barricade of Ederson Moraes in front of him at Manchester City, not to mention Chile’s two-time Copa America winning goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
But that does not mean City would be willing to sell the 22-year-old who, during an impressive loan spell at Norwich City, has already earned his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad.
The Sun claim that both Celtic and Stoke City would like to sign Gunn next season – but it is understood that Pep Guardiola would only let the Etihad academy graduate leave on another temporary deal amid hope that he could be a future number one at City.
But despite Gunn’s talent, and the fact that a number of Manchester City loanees have made an excellent impact at Celtic in the last few seasons, it surely makes little sense for the Hoops to bring the 22-year-old to Parkhead if there is no chance of a permanent deal.
Celtic need a new long-term number one with Craig Gordon and Dorus de Vries aged 35 and 37, but what is the point of signing Gunn if he is only going to be at the club for one year?
Perhaps they should instead press ahead with a deal to sign Scott Bain once his loan move from Dundee comes to an end. Per the Evening Telegraph, Celtic were so impressed by the 26-year-old’s debut performance against Rangers that they are keen to sign him on a free with his contract running out in the summer.
Bain has youth on his side and the potential to be the number one ‘keeper at Celtic for years to come.
If they brought in Gunn instead, Brendan Rodgers would only have to solve the same problem 12 months later.
