Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are closing in on a treble treble but were knocked out of the Europa League by Valencia.
Ally McCoist claims that Celtic have no choice but to invest heavily in new signings this summer if they are to make progress on the European stage, speaking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT (25 April, 9:00am).
It has been a mixed season for Celtic. They are cruising towards an unprecedented third successive domestic treble but once again fell short on the continent, losing to Valencia in the Europa League knockout stages after being stunned in the Champions League qualifiers by a very limited AEK Athens side.
And McCoist, a former Rangers striker and manager, believes that The Hoops need to spend big if they are to avoid another season of frustration in Europe.
“They need to reinvest. It’s a massive, massive summer. Celtic have got to strengthen,” the Scotland legend said.
“They are stuck between a rock and a hard place (because) they’ve got to reinvest if they’re to progress in Europe but they’re going to win the league anyway.”
Celtic are also set to lose a number of key players this summer. Filip Benkovic, Timothy Weah and Jeremy Toljan will leave when their loan deals expire while Dedryck Boyata has failed to agree a new contract.
Central midfielder Olivier Ntcham has been linked with an exit too while doubts also surround the future of Scott Sinclair.
