Clint Hill will leave Rangers at the end of the season but that has not stopped him performing as impressively as ever for Pedro Caixinha’s side.

Rangers' David Weir

Rangers supporters may have felt the club made a mistake when they signed long-serving Everton skipper David Weir on a free in the summer of 2007 (BBC). At the age of 36, the former Scotland international’s best years were seemingly behind him after all.

Five years and eight trophies later, however, it’s fair to say Weir has gone down as one of the most inspired signings in the club’s recent history.

And while few could claim that Clint Hill has proved equally legendary in the Celtic-dominated modern era, the fellow veteran centre-back has also proved that age is just a number in his debut season.

After all, you could make a case that the former QPR defender has been Rangers’ most assured, reliable stopper since Weir himself.

Over the Hill?

And in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Hearts, Hill was at his unassuming best once again. So much so that former Rangers boss Ally McCoist could hardly hide his adulation.

“He was terrific today,” the former striker said in quotes reported by the Evening Times. “It is just an experience thing and he had it in abundance. I thought he was Man of the Match by some distance.”

While no one expected Hill to have a long-term future at Ibrox, you still wonder whether manager Pedro Caixinha may come to regret not extending his contract once he bids farewell at the end of the season.

Because no player in the club’s defensive ranks appears capable of a performing with such consistency.
