Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly move for England manager Gareth Southgate if Mauricio Pochettino walks away from the Premier League giants.

Sam Allardyce admits that he cannot see Gareth Southgate giving up his dreams of glory with England to potentially take over from Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur, while speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (30 September, 8.30am).

With Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen out of contract next summer, coupled with the ongoing malaise of Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Danny Rose, this is starting to feel like the end of a brilliant era for Spurs.

Pochettino himself continues to be linked with a move away from North London just months after leading the club to the Champions League final and the Argentine’s increasingly prickly press conferences hardly paint the picture of a man who is loving life in the dugout right now.

The Daily Star claims that chairman Daniel Levy will ‘pull out all the stops’ to lure Southgate back into the Premier League should Pochettino walk away.

Southgate, like Pochettino, has thrived with a young, hungry squad while getting the best out of Alli, Harry Kane and Harry Winks, though he hasn’t coached anyone at club level since leaving Middlesbrough a decade ago.

And with the 49-year-old desperate to lead England to their first major trophy since 1966 with his contract running until the 2022 World Cup, it seems unlikely that he’d walk away mid-project. At least, that’s what Allardyce thinks.

“It depends on his own ambition, whether he thinks he has something to prove,” said the former Everton, West Ham and Bolton boss.

“He may fancy the dabble but it’s a big ask leaving England to go and manage in the Premier League.at some point. It depends on whether the FA wants to let him go or whether Daniel Levy wants to pay (the compensation).

“I can’t see him going before the Euros.”
