Scottish Premiership giants Rangers are reportedly keen to lure Alex Denny away from Premier League outfit Everton

Everton are the archetypal ‘family club’, an institution renowned for giving young, homegrown players the opportunity to begin a career in this ultra-competitive environment. And under the regime of new director of football Marcel Brands, don’t expect this to change.

Since arriving from PSV, where he helped win three Eredivisie titles in four seasons, Brands has spoken about the need for Everton to continue their tradition of putting youth to the fore. So Alex Denny should keep this at the forefront of his mind as he mulls over a move to Rangers this summer.

The 18-year-old midfielder enjoyed a fine breakthrough season in Everton’s youth ranks in 2017/18, making nine appearances for the club’s U23s, and establishing himself as one of the most exciting budding talents at Finch Farm.

But, according to the Liverpool Echo, negotiations over a new, improved contract have stalled. And it is understood that Rangers are ready to take full advantage by offering Denny the chance to move to Ibrox this summer and hone his trade under one of the best midfielders of his generation, Steven Gerrard.

Though Gerrard obviously trusts in youth, having spent a year earning rave reviews thanks to his work with the Liverpool U18s, Denny might be better off focusing on getting contract talks back on track.

It’s not always easy for academy prospects to make their mark in the Premier League but Everton have put a succession plan in place with the likes of Tom Davies, Jonjoe Kenny, Mason Holgate, and Beni Baningime all establishing themselves in the first team after helping the reserves win the Premier League 2 title.

Denny might be better off ignoring Rangers’ advances.
