Newcastle United-owned striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has told Get West London that he is focused on getting Fulham back to the Premier League, and that he is enjoying playing for the Cottagers.

Mitrovic, who joined Championship club Fulham on loan from Premier League side Newcastle in the January transfer window, has also suggested, as quoted by The Chronicle, that he was not played to his strengths by manager Rafael Benitez at St. James’ Park.

“It’s a good feeling to be here and I am looking forward to every game and I want to play and get on the pitch, this is the reason I’m here,” Mitrovic told Get West London. “I think Fulham needs me and I need Fulham, we both need each other and I’m really happy.”

The Chronicle quotes the striker as saying: “It was good, the team already know my style and try to use me in the best way.

“The ball is where I like to receive, in my legs, with the defender on my shoulder so they try to play me every time.”

Mitrovic added: “At Newcastle, the team there played a compact shape and mostly counter attacked, so this is not where I am strongest.

“This is the style that Rafa played and I have to accept this, but here I have adapted really fast because we play attacking football with a lot of crosses and balls into the box and around it too.”

Aleksandar Mitrovic arrives prior to the Premier League match between Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth at St. James Park on November 4, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Hint on future?

Mitrovic has failed to establish himself in Benitez’s starting lineup, and the Serbia international striker does not seem to have a future at Newcastle.

After all, with the Magpies struggling for survival in the Premier League and struggling for goals, Benitez still let the 23-year-old leave on loan.

From the striker’s aforementioned comments, it is clear that he does not think that he is played to his strengths by the Newcastle boss, and it would make sense for him to try to make his loan deal at Fulham permanent in the summer of 2018 if the London club get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.
