Alan Shearer has backed Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to bounce back from a difficult run of form and has reiterated that he has been a fantastic buy for the North East club, speaking to Sky Sports.

Dubravka joined Newcastle on loan from Sparta Prague 13 months ago and made an immediate impression at St James’ Park, starring on a debut win against Manchester United.

As such, it was no surprise when the Magpies decided to sign him permanent for a bargain fee of just £4 million, as reported by the Sun.

But the usually reliable shot-stopper has made headlines for the wrong reasons in recent weeks, allowing a speculative Son Heung Min shot to slip through his hands in a recent 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before he was arguably at fault for Wolves’ stoppage-time equaliser at Molinuex a week ago.

Shearer, however, has taken the time to praise Dubravka for his impact and believes two mistakes should not overshadow his usually superb form.

“He’s had a tough time in the last couple of games with the mistake at Wolves and the mistake at Wembley but in general I think he’s been a fantastic buy, when you look at the fees that have been paid for some players,” Shearer said.

“His handling, for the most part, has been superb. If he can get over the mistakes that have happened in the last few games then great but in the main I think he’s been a superb buy.

“He seems to be a very good character, not afraid to make a couple of mistakes – as all good players do. He’ll learn from those mistakes.”

The 30-year-old Slovakian international will be looking to bounce back with a clean sheet as Newcastle host shot-shy Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
