Conor Coady helped Wolverhampton Wanderers keep another clean sheet in their 1-0 Premier League win away at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Conor Coady has perhaps not been given the recognition he deserves this season.
With Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Raul Jimenez and co hogging the headlines, the Molineux captain has gone slightly under the radar. But there is no doubt that Coady is a hugely important part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans, starting all eight of their Premier League games at the heart of the back three.
One man who has not overlooked the form of the ex-Liverpool youngster is Alan Shearer.
Speaking on Match of the Day (6 October, 10.25pm), the former England international has paid tribute to the overrated Coady.
“We’ve spoken about Moutinho and Neves several times but Conor Coady and (right-back) Matt Doherty I thought were brilliant today,” Shearer said.
“Coady – his reading of the game, not panicking in tight situations, wanting to play out; he seemed very, very confident.
“He was absolutely magnificent. He’s played at youth level for England, if he keeps on performing like that it won’t be long before he gets a full shout from Gareth Southgate.”
The England manager was keeping a close eye on Coady earlier in the campaign, but the 25-year-old was left out of the current Three Lions squad for the upcoming games against Croatia and the USA.
But, as Shearer says, it is only a matter of time before Coady is handed his England debut with Wolves flying high and genuine contenders for a European place.
