Roberto Martinez’s agent insists the Belgian national team manager will not be leaving his post to take over at Celtic, in quotes reported by the Daily Record.

The Spaniard revealed to the Glasgow Evening Times last year that he turned down the chance to take over at Parkhead a decade ago, choosing instead to prove himself in the Premier League with Wigan Athletic.

With Celtic scouring the market for a full-time successor to the departed Brendan Rodgers, Martinez’s name has once again been thrown into the discussion.

The former Everton and Swansea manager’s stock could hardly be higher after leading a talented Belgium team to the World Cup semi-finals last summer, beating pre-tournament favourites Brazil along the way.

But it seems Martinez won’t be returning to British shores any time soon.

“Roberto always seems to be on the shortlist as soon as there is a vacancy at a big club. But this is a false rumour about him going to Celtic,” Jesse de Preter said.

“It seems to have come from the fact Roberto has a Scottish wife and he obviously has ties to the country. However, there’s nothing to see here.”

As it stands, Neil Lennon appears to be the favourite to take over at Celtic, having worked wonders since returning to Glasgow on an interim basis.

The Hoops are on the verge of the Scottish Premiership title and they will book a spot in the Cup final if they beat Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday.
