Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have been reportedly trying to lure Martin Skrtel to Ibrox from Super Lig outfit Fenerbahce.

Martin Skrtel might leave Fenerbahce this summer but that does not mean he is heading to Rangers.

The former Liverpool centre-back has been linked with a shock move to Ibrox ever since his one-time Anfield team-mate Steven Gerrard was handed the reins to the Glasgow giants earlier in the month.

The Scottish Sun even went as far as to claim that Rangers were closing in on the signing of Skrtel with a fee of £2.7 million seemingly enough to convince Fenerbahce to sell.

But Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto, has now poured cold water on these claims. He admitted that he had spoken to Gerrard personally but stated that finances looked set to ruin Rangers’ hopes of signing the 33-year-old defender.

And Csonto has now suggested that there are only two countries that Skrtel could leave Fenerbahce for – and Scotland is not one of them.

“For me, the only option in the summer transfer market is that Martin would have gone to China or the MLS if it’s interesting,” he said in quotes reported by the Daily Record (live blog, 1.34pm)

It almost goes without saying that Skrtel, who won the League Cup alongside Gerrard in 2012, would earn far more money with a lucrative move to America or the Far East with the wages on offer there dwarfing the figures that Rangers could put on the table.
