Reports in Turkey a month ago suggested that Everton manager Sam Allardyce wanted to send Cenk Tosun back to Besiktas after four Premier League games.
Life at Everton started worryingly slowly for Cenk Tosun.
After months of speculation, the Turkish striker arrived at Goodison Park from Besiktas to the tune of £27 million, but he failed to score in his first four games for the Toffees and, after just two rather ineffective starts, was relegated to the bench by manager Sam Allardyce in February.
Fotomac even stated that Allardyce, who reportedly felt that Tosun did not work hard enough in training, wanted to send the striker back to Besiktas. It looked as though Everton might have fallen for one of the biggest duds in modern Premier League history.
But then the goals started coming. Tosun opened his account for Everton at the fifth time of asking with a well-placed header in the 2-1 defeat to Burnley and has not stopped since. Another one followed in the 2-0 win against Brighton, preceding a match-winning double away at Stoke City before the international break.
Now, Tosun looks like the sort of prolific, poaching goalscorer that Everton have been looking for ever since Romelu Lukaku left for Manchester United last summer.
Patience is a virtue after all and one of Everton’s allegedly biggest flops now looks like one of this season’s few successes.
