Mike Ashley is hardly a popular figure at Ibrox so few would welcome him back when, or if, he manages to sell Newcastle United.
You can see why Rangers supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with the regime put in place by chairman Dave King.
King was frequently criticised by supporters for failing to put his hand in his pocket and invest sufficient funds in new players during Mark Warburton’s spell in the dugout. And although he did made a huge overhaul possible this summer, he has lost much of that credit again by continuing to delay the appointment of a successor for the departed Pedro Caixinha.
It’s now over five weeks since the Portuguese manager was handed his P45 but no one, not even Derek McInnes, has replaced him on the Ibrox sidelines.
But, in the eyes of pundit and former Scotland international Alan Brazil, Rangers would be a lot better off with Mike Ashley at the helm.
“If everything goes smoothly and Ashley pockets a tidy sum [from selling Newcastle], it honestly wouldn’t shock me if he reappeared at Ibrox,” Brazil told The Sunday Post of Ashley, who is aiming to sell Newcastle before Christmas.
“Rangers don’t need hundreds of millions ploughed in up front. The club just needs to be run sensibly on and off the park and allowed to grow after their problems of recent years.”
Brazil might have a point; Rangers have a huge fanbase and retain that historic pulling power, as evidenced by the number of managers who threw their hat into the ring to take over recently.
But Ashley, who sold all of his shares in June 2017, was hardly the most popular figure at Ibrox and would hardly be welcomed back with open arms.
