Connor Kirby impressed as Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday saw off their League One opponents Sunderland in the EFL Cup on Thursday.

Initial impressions count and Connor Kirby has certainly made a good one.
The Barnsley-born 19-year-old made just his second appearance for Sheffield Wednesday’s frist-team in the 2-0 EFL Cup win at Sunderland on Thursday night, coming on at half time to replace debutant Alex Hunt.
Kirby was one of a number of highly-rated youngsters involved on the night but he was probably the best of the lot. Intelligent in possession and showcasing plenty of nice touches, the teenager has certainly shown what he is capable of.
And after publishing a post-game message on Twitter, the Owls fans flocked to express their admiration for the talented young midfielder.

It could be a difficult season for Sheffield Wednesday, who did not spend a single penny during the transfer window. The lack of new signings mean the likes of Kirby, Hunt and co could have a big part to play in the months ahead.
And if Kirby can continue the progress he made against Sunderland in midweek, don’t rule out the Yorkshireman quickly becoming an important part of Luhukay’s plans.
Marco Matias and Adam Reach scored the goals at the Stadium of Light with Wednesday due to play Wolves at Hillsborough in round two.
