Scottish Premiership champions Celtic sold winger Gary Mackay-Steven to Aberdeen for just £150,000 and he is thriving under Derek McInnes.

It is difficult not to feel pleased for Gary Mackay-Steven.

After barely featuring and falling well down the pecking order at Celtic, the 28-year-old winger has got his career back on track with Aberdeen, once again establishing himself as one of the most enjoyable attacking players in Scottish football.

Mackay-Steven continued his resurgence with the winning goal against Hibernian at the weekend, while he has also returned to the Scotland squad in recent weeks, setting up Steven Naismith in the 3-1 friendly defeat to Portugal in October.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Mackay-Steven clearly believes that he has improved since being sold by Celtic for just £150,000 in 2017.

“I feel great at Aberdeen and enjoy the responsibility of being a player to create and score. I feel comfortable and I’m just enjoying my football,” the skilful former Dundee United said.

“At Aberdeen there’s also an emphasis on defensive stuff, working hard for the team. (Manager) Derek McInnes has brought that side into my game and I’m thankful for that.”

Mackay-Steven made just eight Scottish Premiership appearances for Celtic during the 2016/17 season, with Brendan Rodgers clearly not a fan of a player signed by Ronny Deila almost four years ago.

And there is perhaps an argument to be made that the former Liverpool and Swansea boss needed to take a little more time to indulge this confidence player, who boasts natural ability on a par with almost any player in the Scottish top flight.
