Abel Hernandez’s agent says they are delighted with CSKA interest so have Leeds lost their chance?

Leeds United’s hopes of bringing Abel Hernandez to Elland Road could have suffered a seismic blow with the Championship giants outbid by CSKA.

Leeds United appear to be edging closer and closer to the signing of Derby County’s Championship Golden Boot winner Matej Vydra. So much so that Abel Hernandez no longer appears to be Leeds’ top striker target.

Hernandez is a free agent after leaving Hull City but that does not mean he will come cheap. The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Leeds have held off signing the Uruguayan international amid concerns about adding him to the wage bill

The 28-year-old was earning £40,000 a week at Humberside, which would make him Leeds’ highest-earning player by some way.

And it seems this delay could prove to be costly. Because CKSA Moscow – the Russian giants who are also in the race for Hernandez – appear to have stepped up their pursuit in recent days.

Tuttomercatoweb claims that CSKA have offered Hernandez a three-year deal worth over £50,000 a week, which could blow Leeds out the water.

“Hernandez is not a CSKA player yet, but we received a good offer from them, we are delighted with this interest. Let’s just wait,” the striker’s agent Pablo Betancourt said in quotes reported by Diario Carioca.

As things stand, it seems far more likely that Hernandez will be playing in Moscow next season rather than West Yorkshire.

If the South American really is delighted with his contract offer from CSKA, who finished second in the Russian league last season, Leeds might have missed their chance.
