Pedro Goncalves came off the bench and impressed as Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers held Eredivisie giants Ajax to a 1-1 draw.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ pre-season plans have certainly gone to plan so far.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side beat Champions League regulars FC Basel 2-1 before sweeping aside the current Swiss champions Young Boys 4-0. And, although their winning run came to an end against Ajax on Thursday, Wolves picked up another impressive result in a 1-1 draw against the Dutch giants.
A new-look, bulked-up Helder Costa was the star man, winning a penalty after a dazzling run that Ruben Neves converted in the second half to cancel out the opener from Donny Van der Beek.
While new signings Rui Patricio, Raul Jimenez and Leo Bonatini were all left out, there was one new face for Wolves fans to get acquainted to. And Pedro Goncalves certainly impressed in his 20 minutes on the pitch.
The youngster came on for fellow starlet Morgan Gibbs-White in the 71st minute and wasted no time in showing why Wolves signed him from Valencia on a four-year deal almost a year ago to the day.
Goncalves is a clever and composed talent who looked very comfortable in the centre of the park up against a supremely promising Ajax midfield. With Gibbs-White and left-back Ryan Giles staring in pre-season, it seems that Goncalves has enhanced his reputation, too.
