If Aston Villa are promoted to the Premier League for next season, it has been reported that captain John Terry could sit out games against Chelsea.
There is no doubt that John Terry would have received offers from other Premier League clubs when his 20-year stay in the Chelsea first-team came to an end in the summer of 2017.
But the ‘captain, leader, legend’ simply could not imagine pulling on another kit and leading a team out against his boyhood club. That was part of the reason why he decided to drop down to the Championship with Aston Villa instead, signing a one-year deal on £60,000 a week.
With Villa just one game away from the Premier League however, with Saturday’s play-off final against Fulham, Terry could find himself in the middle of a dilemma. If he signs a one-year extension at Villa Park, he would have to bite the bullet and try to beat the team he loves.
“Well, we’ll not pick him against Chelsea if that’s what he wants,” quipped manager Steve Bruce, albeit tongue in cheek.
But if Terry is the captain of Aston Villa, surely his full focus should be on the team in claret and blue, regardless of his history at Stamford Bridge?
