Leeds United and Aston Villa are both reportedly interested in Newcastle United’s back-up Premier League goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
The transfer market has gone slightly crazy in the last year or two and the Championship has followed suit. In the last two years, the likes of Britt Assmbalonga, Joao Carvalho and Scott Hogan have moved to second tier clubs for fees in excess of £12 million.
So, with Karl Darlow seemingly in demand, you would imagine he would be worth a substantial sum considering he was arguably the best goalkeeper in the Championship in the 2016/17 season, producing some outstanding virtuoso performances as Newcastle United won the title.
But, according to Yorkshire Evening Post, Darlow could cost just £4 million in the January transfer window with Newcastle open to discussions about a mid-season exit.
It is understood that Leeds United are interested in the 28-year-old shot-stopper, who is comfortably second choice behind Martin Dubravka at St James’ Park. The Sun has also linked Aston Villa with a January move.
And, considering that Darlow is a proven Championship goalkeeper, a man who looked a cut above at Newcastle and impressed during his younger days at Nottingham Forest, he would be a fine addition in today’s market for a fee as affordable as £4 million.
With Leeds and Aston Villa fighting at the top of the table, with promotion in their sights, the addition of Darlow would be a massive step in the right direction. He has been here and done it before and would not break the bank.
