Premier League newcomers Aston Villa are reportedly looking to hijack Brighton’s £18m for Leandro Trossard but what about Nottingham Forest’s Joe Lolley?

It seemed only a matter of time before Leandro Trossard arrived at Brighton and Hove Albion with a blue and white scarf around his neck. But, according to the Argus, there could be a sting in the tail.

Newly promoted Aston Villa are circling and hoping to hijack Brighton’s potential £18 million deal for a winger who exploded onto the scene with a remarkable 2018/19 campaign in Belgian football.

Trossard scored 22 goals and produced 11 assists last season, captaining Genk to the Jupiler League title and catching the eye of numerous Premier League clubs.

While Aston Villa might just have left things a little too late with Brighton still in pole position, they shouldn’t give up just yet with their ambitious owners clearly keen to spend big.

But just how good could Trossard be? Is he worth £18 million? And how does he compare with Villa’s long-time target, and boyhood fanatic, Joe Lolley?

The Birmingham Mail claimed recently that Villa were looking to hand the explosive Nottingham Forest winger a dream move to the Midland giants, although the switch would be far from a sentimental one.

Lolley was a revelation in the Championship last season and famously scored once and set up four more during a 5-5 draw against Dean Smith’s side. But Lolley’s stats pale into significance compared to Trossard’s. In fact, he scored ten fewer goals in all competitions.

There is no room for sentiment in football and, if Trossard is the better option, there’s nothing to stop Villa going all out for him instead.
