Hibernian midfielder John McGinn would be an excellent addition for either Scottish Premiership giant, Celtic or Rangers, this summer.

Scott Brown and Scott Bain of Celtic react during the Rangers v Celtic Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Back in the summer of 2007, a Hibernian midfielder by the name of Scott Brown turned down Rangers to sign for their Old Firm rivals Celtic for £4.4 million.

The rest, as they say, is history. Now club captain, Brown has helped establish Celtic as the dominant power in Scottish football and has won seven league titles since he swapped Easter Road for Parkhead.

But, 11 years later, should Rangers aim to turn the tables on Celtic?

Ironically, Brown’s long-term successor for club and country appears to come from Hibernian too. John McGinn has long been linked with a move to Celtic, who The Chronicle claims are planning a summer swoop for while Hibs manager Neil Lennon has constantly valued him at around £5 million.

But it is no secret that Rangers want an energetic and forceful midfielder too, as links with Youssouf Mulumbu show.

And McGinn would pretty much by a typical sort of signing for director of football Mark Allan in that he is young, promising and has performed very well against Rangers this season in Hibs 2-1 win at Ibrox back in February.

Now, McGinn is possibly the most exciting young midfielder in Scottish football – and if Rangers have serious intentions of breaking Celtic’s stranglehold on the league title, then they need to make a march ahead of them in the transfer market.
