Sunderland midfielder Max Power has now been sent off twice in 13 games in League One.

Max Power of Sunderland (L) is sent off during the Sky Bet League One match between Sunderland and Oxford United at Stadium of Light on September 1, 2018 in Sunderland, United Kingdom.

Sunderland’s Max Power moved to Wearside in the summer on loan from Championship side Wigan Athletic, and the midfielder has impressed in patches.

Power has bagged two goals and has struck up a good partnership with the in-form Lee Cattermole, but two red cards in 13 League One matches have taken away much from his decent displays.

The Birkenhead-born man will have missed more than half of his new side’s matches by the time of his return in November, and Power could struggle to get back into the side.

Power was holding off competition from fringe midfielders Dylan McGeouch and Luke O’Nien prior to his first red card and rightly so, with consistently strong displays in the anchor role in midfield.

The 25-year-old was re-introduced straight back into the Sunderland side after his first suspension – and even took the captain’s armband for two matches. But a ridiculous foul against Bradford player Ryan McGowan which almost cost his side three points saw him sent to the stands for a second straight red card.

With both McGeouch and O’Nien hitting some good form, Ross may be forced to bench Power on his return to the first-team squad for his side’s league game against Wycombe in mid-November.

Scotsman McGeouch has started to demonstrate why he was brought to Wearside and the 2-1 win at Valley Parade, followed by a 2-0 win against Shrewsbury Town last weekend, saw the former Hibernian man contribute heavily.

As well as McGeouch, summer arrival O’Nien has forced his way into consideration for a permanent place in the Sunderland first-team, after bagging a beautifully worked goal at Greenhous Meadow last weekend.
