Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady came on as a substitute against Burton Albion in his first appearance of the season.
Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady has been blighted by injury so far this season, but made his first appearance of the campaign in a 2-1 loss at the Pirelli Stadium against Burton Albion last weekend.
The Irish international came onto the field when the Black Cats were 2-0 down to the hosts, but McGeady’s presence instantly changed the dynamic of the match in favour of the travelling side.
And after impressing in his side’s first loss of the season, McGeady has to start in Sunderland’s important game next weekend against Rochdale.
Sunderland have been at their best this term when attacking in wide areas and last weekend was no different, with McGeady’s introduction marking the away sides best spell of the game just after half-time.
Fellow wide man Chris Maguire scored a goal just three minutes after the former Celtic man came onto the field and it was no coincidence that McGeady played a part in the build up to the goal that got Sunderland back into the game.
Unfortunately for the travelling fans, Maguire’s stunning strike from 25 yards didn’t earn the Black Cats any points, but it was clear to see that both he and McGeady struck fear into the opposition defence when both men were flying down either wing.
And with McGeady in Jack Ross’s starting line-up against a struggling Rochdale side next week, both he and Maguire would cause havoc to the defence with one of the worst record’s in League One this season.
