Sunderland have fielded three different full-backs at right-back so far this season.
Sunderland made 12 shrewd additions to their League One side this summer, many of which have been hugely effective in the early part of the 2018/19 campaign.
The Black Cats added players in many key areas of the pitch, but lack a right-back on the evidence of their recent matches in the third tier.
Jack Ross has fielded three different members of his side at right-back this season and the Scot will need to make use of the January transfer window to find his first-choice right-back for the second half of the season.
Both Donald Love and Adam Matthews have shared the position on the right side of defence, but neither have cemented a spot and really made it their own so far this term.
Sunderland’s recent game against Fleetwood Town saw Welshman Matthews give away a penalty on the right-hand side and had stopper McLaughlin not saved the conversion, the Black Cats might’ve lost the game and more importantly their unbeaten record.
Former Manchester United youngster Love has also featured at right-back in recent matches, but like Matthews has failed to impress when given a chance to do so.
Youngster Denver Hume has also featured at full-back this term and caught the eye of the Sunderland faithful doing so, especially in Sunderland’s Checkatrade Trophy victory over Stoke City Under-23’s.
But with the 22-year-old a predominantly left-sided full-back, Sunderland will need to explore the January window to find their right man.
