Charlie Wyke scored Sunderland’s equaliser when he came off the bench against Oxford United last Saturday.

Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke came off the bench against Oxford United last weekend to not only make his first-team debut, but also to score the equalising goal for the Black Cats.
The strike from Wyke kept Sunderland’s unbeaten League One record in tact, despite displaying one of their poorest performances to date against Karl Robinson’s side.
And after scoring his goal after seven minutes, the 25-year-old revealed he once thought he did not have a future in football in an interview with the Chronicle.
Speaking on how his career has panned out, Wyke said: “I got released from Middlesbrough which was frustrating, sad, I didn’t think there was a future for me in football at the time. I went away, worked hard and started to work my way up the leagues.
“This is obviously a huge club and hopefully we can get this club doing the same again, to get it back where it should be.”

The former Hartlepool United striker missed Sunderland’s opening month in the third tier, but looks to be an excellent alternative to Josh Maja, who has four goals in six games this season.
Wyke could feature in Sunderland’s Tuesday evening Checkatrade Trophy clash with Stoke City Under-21’s, with Jack Ross expected to rest key players and give players who lack game time a chance, and the forward is certainly lacking game time this term.
