Sunderland have been keen on bringing in a striker in the loan window, but should really prioritise a central defender.

Sunderland looked to have made a number of signings in defence this summer, with four experienced central defenders already putting pen to paper.

And manager Jack Ross looks keen to make the most of the loan window by bringing another striker to the League One side.

After some shoddy defending on display in Sunderland’s EFL Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday, however, it’s obvious that a central defender should be at the top of Ross’s priority list.

Alim Ozturk replaced Glenn Loovens to partner Jack Baldwin in the game against the Owls and it was the Turk at fault for the first goal, with the 25-year-old displaying some shoddy defending.

Baldwin also looked suspect in patches, often allowing Wednesday’s attacking line to get in behind due to Sunderland’s high defensive line.

34-year-old Loovens, however, has been the composed head in the heart of defence in the early stages of this season and looks like a shrewd addition from Ross.

But with the reliability of Ozturk and Baldwin in question – and Tom Flanagan currently out injured – Sunderland should almost definitely look at bringing in another central defender.
