Sunderland should prepare a transfer move for Cheltenham Town striker Mohamed Eisa

Sunderland are in desperate need of a striker who will fire them back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Sunderland’s new manager Jack Ross is yet to make any signings ahead of his side’s League One campaign.

Black Cats owner Stewart Donald recently suggested that Sunderland players wanting to stay on Wearside are at a minimum, suggesting a squad overhaul will happen in the not so distant future.

Number one on the transfer priority list for the former St Mirren manager will be a striker who can score 20 or more goals a season; something Sunderland have not had since fan favourite Jermain Defoe left in 2017.

However, on Sunderland’s radar should be Cheltenham Town striker Mohamed Eisa – a player who could be prolific at League One level, as well as being somebody who would fit into Ross’s mantle of building a squad around young players.

Eisa scored 25 goals in 50 appearances last season for a Cheltenham side that finished 17th, just five points above the relegation zone. The 23-year-old from Sudan scored 23 goals in League Two last term, with a goal coming every 163 minutes.

Not only is Eisa a proven goal-scorer, he also stands up to the demands of playing in the English Football League, as proved by the 3757 minutes he played in Cheltenham’s league campaign last year.

Eisa has also worked his way up to League Two from the lower leagues of English Football, something that has worked in the past with other teams’ players, including Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, West Ham winger Michail Antonio and legendary England forward Peter Crouch.

Eisa has played for a number of lower league clubs in the past, including Dartford and Leatherhead and has even played amateur football with Kent based side Corinthian, all of which stand the player in good stead for life in the big leagues.

Cheltenham’s number 20 has only been at the club for a year and has proved his worth in League Two. Next term 42-year-old Ross could be the man to offer Eisa his big break in a league above his playing level and with the player unlikely to break the bank of Sunderland, he could well be a great fit for the Black Cats.
