The Irish international has made 35 appearances for Sunderland since joining from Everton in 2017.

Sunderland find themselves in League One next term after back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship. But, with what looks like a new era beginning on Wearside, Sunderland fans are optimistic about the future.

At the heart of that new era is new owner Stewart Donald, as well as former St Mirren manager Jack Ross.

Both men will be keen to make multiple changes in a Sunderland squad that has not performed to anywhere near its best ability in recent years.

However, despite a clear need for change, Sunderland should do everything they can to keep certain players, including 32-year-old Aiden McGeady.

McGeady scored seven goals last season and provided five assists, despite only playing limited minutes across the season, with a lot of those coming as a substitute.

The Sunderland winger is one of the most creative players fans on Wearside have seen in recent years and often captured the imagination of the Sunderland faithful last season, despite a poor campaign from most of the squad.

And with the third tier of English football often being one that includes a lot of direct passing and a noticeable amount of physicality, McGeady’s flair would offer Sunderland’s new boss a refreshing option when choosing his squad.

As well as his technical ability being something that offers Sunderland a fantastic outlet for League One, McGeady is not one of Sunderland’s highest earners, meaning new coach Ross will not be forced to sell his player.

Although Sunderland have a fantastic player on their books for a year in England’s third division, it will be important for Donald and Ross to make several new acquisitions for what will be a gruelling campaign.
