Sunderland’s record transfer Didier Ndong spent last season on loan at Premier League Watford – and despite only clocking up a grand total of 49 minutes on the pitch in 2018, reports are emerging from the Chronicle suggesting Cardiff City are preparing a bid for the player.

Ndong arrived on Wearside in 2016 for a record breaking transfer fee of around £13.6m, but failed to live up to expectations and moved to Watford on loan in the second half of last season.

However, despite the Gabonese midfielder failing to impress at both Sunderland and Watford – Welsh side Cardiff look to be one of a few clubs interested in Ndong’s services.

An offer from Cardiff or elsewhere may well be one that the Black Cats welcome, with the midfielder being one of a few players who won’t be taking a pay-cut next term – meaning Ndong would be an expensive player for new manager Jack Ross to keep hold of.

The former Lorient man has made 49 appearances in his time at the club, scoring just one goal against Crystal Palace in a 4-0 win.

Sunderland’s new venture next season will be an important one in a new era on Wearside, with new owner Stewart Donald looking to take the club in a new direction with former St Mirren boss Ross now in charge.

And that new era will require players like Ndong to leave the club before the Black Cats can move forward and put recent back-to-back relegations behind them.

Not only would Ndong be a costly player to keep on Wearside, the player is quite clearly not as good as his original price tag suggests – meaning a move for the youngster would be one that is welcomed by all parties.
