Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has played for the Black Cats 2009, when he joined from Wigan Athletic.

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is the longest serving senior player currently in the Black Cats ranks, having been at the club since 2009.

The 30-year-old has had up’s and down’s in his time on Wearside, with a League Cup final on his CV, but also back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and Championship.

And after rumours that Cattermole could depart from Wearside this summer, reports from the Sunderland Echo suggest the player could be close to linking back up with his former manager Gustavo Poyet at Bordeaux.

Cattermole has made 205 appearances in his time with Sunderland and has scored three goals from his defensive midfield position – the most memorable in a 2-2 draw away to West Bromwich Albion back in 2014.

After several years as captain and one of the first names on the Sunderland teamsheet, however, Cattermole’s Wearside stint could be close to its conclusion with a move to France.

Sunderland have made a number of shrewd additions to their League One squad this summer, with manager Jack Ross signing three central midfielders. Luke O’Nien, Max Power and Dylan McGeouch all put pen to paper this summer, and Cattermole’s reported move to Bordeaux would seemingly suit all parties.
