Sunderland played six games in October and since the turn of November, Jack Ross’ side will have played three games in three different competitions once they finish their tie against Morecambe in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.
The Black Cats have responded well to the hectic schedule which comes with being in League One – but the games continue to come thick and fast, with the heavy winter schedule just around the corner.
But Sunderland captain George Honeyman admitted his team are relishing the schedule in an interview with the Sunderland Echo – and he believes the players on Wearside would be happy with a game every three days.
When speaking about the recent cup matches Sunderland have played in, Honeyman said: “I wouldn’t say the cups are a distraction at all, when you get into the mentality of winning games you want as many games as possible.
“We’d be happy with a game every three days when we’re thinking as we are at the minute, ‘Right, let’s just get on and win it’.”
24-year-old Honeyman scored a goal within just 36 seconds in Sunderland’s recent 2-1 win against Port Vale in the FA Cup and the victory was the seventh-straight win for the former Premier League regulars.
Ten matches undefeated is proof of Sunderland’s squad being more than capable to deal with the sheer amount of games that comes with being in the third-tier.
But with promotion from League One the priority, Ross will have to balance his team selections correctly to ensure Sunderland do get promoted, as failure to do so would be a disaster for the Wearside club.
