Sunderland manager Jack Ross made North-East-born George Honeyman captain at the start of this season.

Sunderland captain George Honeyman is living out every Black Cats fan’s dream as he leads his side out each week in a new era on Wearside.
The Prudhoe-born man has played in every one of Sunderland’s games this season, including seven League One ties, a Checkatrade Trophy match and the Black Cats’ only loss of the season in the Carabao Cup.
And in an interview with the Chronicle, Honeyman has admitted he could have only ever dreamt of being captain of his boyhood club, but his main ambition lies in wanting to lift silverware with his side.
When speaking about the early stages of this season as captain, Honeyman said: “It’s been a bit surreal but I’m loving it.
“There’s a lot of different responsibilities that you’re not always aware of when you’re just a player but for me to get the captaincy so early in my career, I’m delighted.
“It’s only half the dream at the minute. I want to be lifting some silverware for Sunderland at the end of the year so I’d die happy if I got that.”

The 24-year-old will lead his side out at the Pirelli Stadium against Burton Albion this weekend, as the League One schedule really begins to intensify.
But if Sunderland can bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking this season, Honeyman could become a legend with the club he has supported since being a young boy.
