Sunderland summer signing Dylan McGeouch joined the Black Cats from Hibernian and had impressed the Wearside faithful with his pre-season performances over the summer.

The 25-year-old sustained an injury which kept him out of the first-team setup for the opening four games of the League One season, but returned as a substitute in Sunderland’s 4-1 win away to Gillingham Town last month.

Jack Ross has given his fellow Scotsman a chance as a starter in the Black Cats XI as of late, but after some poor displays, McGeouch must look to improve as the League One schedule begins to heat up.

The Sunderland midfielder was granted a place in the first-team after the influential Max Power was sent off against Oxford United, but McGeouch has often look cumbersome alongside Lee Cattermole.

Ross’ men were held to a 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town last weekend and the Scottish international struggled to get up to the pace of the game from the off.

Suggestions have been made that both McGeouch and a resurgent Cattermole simply cannot play together, as they often attempt to occupy a similar role in Sunderland’s line-up.

McGeouch may potentially be better alongside captain George Honeyman, who plays as a more attacking central midfielder.

However, regardless of his midfield partner, McGeouch has to improve on his recent performances, with some key games ahead for Sunderland which will ultimately decide their third-tier fate.
