Young Sunderland trio could be best midfield in League One next season

Sunderland have a new-look midfield ahead of life in League One, with several midfield additions having arrived on Wearside this summer.

Sunderland have made a number of midfield signings this summer as Jack Ross looks to bolster his squad for life in League One, with Luke O’Nien the most recent midfield arrival on Wearside.

Ross’ mantle of fielding younger players is evident in his signings this summer, with the former Wycombe Wanderers midfielder currently just 23-years-old.

And O’Nien will likely feature alongside another two young prospects in Lynden Gooch and George Honeyman when Sunderland start their third tier campaign, with the trio certainly having the potential to be one of the best midfield contingents in League One.

Honeyman has become somewhat of a fan favourite on Wearside, with not only his footballing ability, but also his sheer desire to play for his boyhood club when pulling on the infamous Sunderland colours.

The 23-year-old has made 48 appearances since making his first-team debut in 2015 and is even looking like the favourite to be Sunderland captain next season after wearing the armband for his side’s pre-season campaign.

His partnership with fellow midfielder and former Academy colleague Gooch was one of the shining lights for Black Cats fans in a dismal Championship campaign last season, something that Honeyman will be looking to replicate in the third tier.

Gooch has made less appearances than Honeyman in Sunderland’s first-team, having made 35 appearances since his debut in late 2015, but his impact has certainly been impressive, having made a number of eye-catching displays last term.

The American made 24 appearances last season, scoring one goal from the penalty spot and assisting his teammates on four occasions, but like Honeyman it was Gooch’s work rate that the Sunderland faithful appreciated.

And with both Honeyman and Gooch’s work rate on the pitch, mixed in with new boy O’Nien’s evident quality from his days in a Wycombe Wanderers shirt last season, Sunderland could have one of the most potent midfield threes in the league next season.
